It was another crazy week of boys and girls high school basketball to cap off pick’em sponsored by The Sports Chronicle. It turned out to be tough treading for everyone as the top three finishers all had two misses and the rest of the top five was rounded out by those who missed three picks. The boys season heads into its final four weeks of the regular season while the girls campaign is in its final week of action before sectional competition tips off for the 35th annual girls tourney. Colleen Asher scored a game-high 23 points to lead visiting Scecina Memorial past Cardinal Ritter 52-40 in girls action on Saturday night. It was the second straight win for Scecina who has not won two consecutive games since the first two games to start the regular season. Senior forward Michael Mislan scored 15 points and grabbed 10 caroms to help Roncalli (10-4) to a 60-49 win over Greenwood in a boys high school basketball game on Saturday. The other games on the slate were played on Friday. The winners were: Cathedral over Arlington 52-45, Brebeuf Jesuit beat Bishop Chatard 49-40, Roncalli upended Cardinal Ritter 61-51 and Scecina defeated Triton Central 59-54. In girls action, Brebeuf Jesuit beat Cardinal Ritter 44-38 and Greenwood defeated Cathedral 54-43. Ed Cahill pulled away from the field to garner first place as his slate was the only one with two misses. The rest of the field submitted three or more incorrect picks. Patrick Ward moved ahead of the pack of players who missed three since he was the only one who correctly picked winner of the tiebreaker game—Scecina to beat host Cardinal Ritter in a girls basketball game. Mike Cahill did not get to vie for the top spot against younger brother Ed since he had a double whammy by missing the tie breaker and failing to pick the winner of one game that put him back in the pack with the many who missed three games. Jennifer McNally and Rick Griebelbauer finished in the last two spots to round out the top five. McNally tuned in a tiebreaker score of 88 points while Griebelbauer had 86. Scecina won 52-40 in the tiebreaker for 92 points, giving an edge to McNally for fourth-place while Griebelbauer captured fifth. Ed Cahill wins a Sports Chronicle T-shirt (value $10), a Sports Chronicle lanyard (value $5), a free oil change for Beck’s Muffler (6025 Madison Avenue), and a free haircut from SportsClips. Ward grabs a free pizza, order of bread sticks and drinks from HotBox Pizza, and a free haircut from SportsClips, as well as, a gift certificate for a free oil change at Beck’s Muffler (6025 Madison Avenue). Mike Cahill wins a $10 gift certificate to Sahm’s Place (65th and Keystone), and a free double steakburger from Steak ‘N Shake to go with a free haircut from SportsClips. McNally wins a $10 gift certificate to Exclusives Salon & Day Spa (8933 Southeastern Avenue) and a free double steakburger from Steak “N Shake, along with a free haircut from SportsClips. Griebelbauer wins a 10 gift certificate from Iaria’s Restaurant (317 South College Avenue) and $5 gift certificate to GT South’s Restaurant (Several locations) and a free haircut from SportClips. Each of the entrants to place in the top five also will receive a gift card that will save $10 off a $50 purchase at Dick’s Sporting Goods (several locations).
