Members of the Roncalli girls basketball team did their best to send off their senior teammates on a high note as the team heads into sectional competition next week. One can call it mission accomplished. Freshman guard Marissa Espinosa hit a runner in the lane for the first basket of the game and a 2-0 lead for Cardinal Ritter. It would be the only lead of the game for the Cardinals. The Rebels scored seven unanswered points to take the lead, eventually outscoring Cardinal Ritter 22-10 in the first quarter and was never threatened in a game played at Roncalli Thursday night. The Rebels coasted to a 66-37 victory over the (10-9) Raiders. Three players scored in double figures, led by a career-high of 22 points by sophomore guard CoCo Clark. Junior guard Keagin Green scored 14 points, followed by sophomore center Katie Brewer’s 10. Roncalli seniors Caitlin Hansen and Natalie Cahill were honored before the game. The two seniors have now won 52 games in their four seasons to top the previous mark of 50 set by the class who entered in 2000. Lady Rebels look forward to next week’s sectional The now 13-7 Rebels head into sectional action with plenty of momentum, winning its fourth consecutive game and seventh in their last eight. Roncalli has defeated its opponents an average of more than 10 points during the win streak. Roncalli will try to position itself for a run for a sectional title that begins next week. The Rebels compete in Class 3A, Sectional 26 at Beech Grove where they will earn a bye in the first round. Last season, the Rebels defeated Northwest 60-56 to win the sectional championship before Rushville beat them 48-44 in Regional competition. Roncalli has won 11 sectional titles. Bishop Chatard and Brebeuf Jesuit will play the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday to see who earns a right to move onto the next round against Roncalli in the first game on Friday night.
