Dan McNally is excited about the future of girls tennis at Bishop Chatard, and rightfully so as he is anxious to start the season next year despite recently coming off another successful  campaign at the northside school whose team was ranked for the eighth time in 10 seasons. Things are looking up for the program.

The Trojans lost only five times this season -- each time to a team ranked by the Indiana High School  Tennis Coaches Association while turning in one of their usual seasons under McNally winning 14 matches.

Senior  Lauren Paras, who finished three wins shy of the school mark of 60, finished second all-time in wins with 57. Her sister Morgan registered a record of 18-4, while junior Andrea Sergi compiled a 17-5 slate in their first year of varsity competition.

A big surprise: freshman player

One of the biggest surprises for McNally was freshman Sarah Winternheimer, who reeled off 14 straight match wins to finish just two shy of the mark set by Karen Church in 1986. Three junior varsity players McNally hopes will be able to strengthen the team next season are: sisters sophomore Lexi Siegler (12-3) and junior Brittany Siegler (11-4) along with junior Morgan Van Senus (13-4).

McNally was particularly impressed with how well Winternheimer played.

"She just came in and started to beat everyone she was playing, and I cannot wait to see what she looks like when she takes the court as a sophomore," McNally said. "All of these girls will be in a position to lead our team."

The matches that stand out

The three matches that stand out for McNally this past season came against Heritage Christian, Noblesville and Terre Haute South.

"We ended up beating a very good Heritage Christian team 5-0 and that was big for us," McNally said. "We were able to beat Noblesville, who was ranked ahead of us to give us some confidence, and lost only 3-2 on the road to a Terre Haute North team that went to the final four one year ago."

McNally was very upbeat describing working with the team this past season.

"I have been doing this now for 25 years, and I cannot think of any other team that was more together spirit-wise than this one," McNally said. "They certainly were a special group of girls."
