One could easily tell who was winning in the Cardinal Ritter-Speedway football game with one glance at both cheering sections for the respective teams.

The fans for Speedway were loud and boisterous after the Sparkplugs defense forced Cardinal Ritter to turn over the ball on downs since it could not score from the eight yard-line, but it was about the only thing it had to cheer about in the game.

Senior defensive back Alex Parrett stepped in front of a Speedway receiver for an interception on the ensuing possession and returned the interception 43 yards with 8:13 remaining in the first quarter. Junior Logan Beamon broke several tackles on a 25-yard run and senior runningback Alex Strahle finished off the drive with a nifty 20-yard touchdown run with 7:31 remaining. Riley Ellington's extra point made it 7-0.

It would not be until the second quarter until either team would hit pay dirt and that would happen on the first possession. Senior runningback Robby Hagan had a 12-yard run and senior runningback Bryan Schmidt hauled in a 21-yard pass at the two yard-line to set up the Raiders next score. Junior Jake Purichia pushed his way into the end on a quarterback sneak with 10:23 remaining in the second quarter and the Raiders led 13-0 after it missed the extra point attempt.

Cardinal Ritter's next score came when Purichia hit a wide-open Parrett who was racing down the sidelines when he hauled in the pass at the 30-yard line and he ran in for a touchdown. A Hagan catch on the two-point conversion made it 21-0 with 6:57 left to play in the first half and the rout was on.

The Cardinal Ritter defense never allowed Speedway's offense to get on track until late in the game when their starters were on the sidelines as the Raiders won 49-21 in the Class 2A, Sectional 30 contest at Marian University on Friday night.

Cardinal Ritter's dominant performance on offense and suffocating defense deflated the Sparkplugs who were outmatched and outmanned on this night. Purichia completed 10-of-16 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns. Junior Logan Beaman gained 92 yards on four carries and scored one touchdown while Parrott amassed 145 yards on four receptions and had two touchdowns.

Next week, the Class 2A No. 1 Raiders travel to Broad Ripple to play for the sectional championship against the Rockets at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2.
