The third time proved to be the charm for the Class 4A No. 5 Rebels going against No. 3 Lawrence North, and they did it in grand fashion. The Rebels stormed back from a 16-point, second-quarter deficit to win the Lawrence Central sectional title  -- their first sectional crown as a 4A team -- by 10 points.

Roncalli had fallen twice before in the regular season to the Wildcats, each time by four points in December. The Rebels lost the Marion County championship 47-43 on Dec. 8 and  again at home 55-51 on Dec. 18. In the third meeting, Roncalli was determined to come away the victor

"We wanted to play our absolute hardest and really focus. We all had the will to win," said senior Bridget Perry, who led the offensive charge for the Rebels with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

It took a whole lot of will and Rebel pride to win this game, as the team played tight and nervous in the early going. The Rebels found themselves trailing 30-14 early in the second quarter. An unlikely leader, freshman Lindsey Corsaro, stepped up to keep the Rebels in the game. Corsaro scored 13 of 21 points in the second quarter as they closed the within nine points at halftime 34-25.

Turning the tide

Roncalli played the third quarter with renewed passion, energy and focus, playing aggressive and attacking to take charge. The Rebels scored nearly as many points in one quarter as they did the first half, outscoring Lawrence North 23-8 to take a 48-42 lead into the decisive fourth quarter.

Lawrence North struggled in the fourth quarter, going scoreless for the first 5:25 of the quarter, sealing their fate to go down to defeat. Elizabeth Bowers added 10 points for the Rebels while Kellie Kirkhoff had nine points.
