It has been said that some of the best surprises are the ones which are unexpected, which is the case with the Bishop Chatard girls tennis team this season.

The Trojans returned just two seniors in number-one singles player Morgan Paras and number two singles player Marianne Sergi. Head coach Dan McNally's  inexperienced team found it hard to get time on the court to practice due to inclement weather in the first month of the season. The slow start inhibited the team's ability to gain experience and come together as a team early in the season.

"It has taken a long time for me to be able to figure out a lineup for the team," McNally told The Sports Chronicle. "We were only able to practice three days at the start of the season due to all the bad weather, and it has taken some time for the girls to get settled in a lineup."

Sophomore Susie Winternheimer competes at number-three singles while senior Sarah Winternheimer and junior Hannah Huxhold play at number-one doubles. The number-two doubles consists of junior Maggie Maniago and freshman Sophie Wojtalik round out the rest of the lineup for Bishop Chatard.

Paras closing in on school record

Paras is 10-5 so far this season and is only four wins away from setting the career wins mark at Bishop Chatard while Sergi has been her steady self since joining the varsity team her sophomore year. Paras has 57 career wins. Sergi went undefeated posting a 15-0 mark on the junior varsity team as a sophomore and followed up that campaign by losing only once in 19 matches that included three wins over rival Cathedral. So far this season, she is 12-3 at the number-two singles slot. Sergi is on pace to set  the school record for winning percentage with a 91.8 win percentage in her career. The current record is held by BrieAnne Eichorn who has the win percentage record at 85.2.

"These two girls have been leaders over their career for Bishop Chatard and have played a key part in our success," McNally said. "They are true leaders and it has been a pleasure to have them on the team."

McNally said the lack of practice was a key reason for the slow start to the season, but his team started to turn the corner when it competed in the Mooresville Invitational last month. The Trojans defeated host Mooresville 3-2 and blanked Charlestown 5-0 to capture the title. In the championship match, Paras won her last 11 games to close out the match. It is also the day the Trojans doubles team played its best tennis of the season.

"Our doubles team really started to click at the tournament, and they have just been getting better with each match," McNally said. "The team just has been getting better and it has been a pleasant surprise this year."

City Tourney next week

Bishop Chatard will compete in the City Tournament at Riverside Park next week where he said his team has a good shot to finish second. McNally said Cathedral should have four girls who will be named to the All-State team.

McNally is completing his 28th season at the helm for Bishop Chatard and knows what his players need to do in order to be successful on the court.

"We have a number of matches that we just cannot lose  and a number that we cannot win, and it comes down to those matches that end up 3-2 where you have to pull out the win on the last match," McNally said. "We have had a lot more pleasant outcomes that we did not expect and it has been good to see the girls be so successful."
